I'm sorry.
I am sick and have nothing funny/entertaining/embarrassing to tell you. Except that last night I slept for 12 hours. And that I took myself to the doctor like a real grownup. And that now I am eating a bagel for breakfast (at 1:40pm) and then plan on watching a Baby Story until I fall asleep.
Also, in case you were concerned...I did take today off (no napping in the office, unfortunately).
Here's hoping I am in more of a writing mood tomorrow. But no promises.
Books #17, #18 & #19: Chaos Walking Trilogy
I'm keeping track of my books here on the blog and on Goodreads, so while I updated and rated it on Goodreads, it totally slipped my mind here. Anyway, it was meh (three out of five stars) and I didn't like the ending at all. Also, I definitely cannot even think about seeing the movie because the trailer made me too upset, but I might recommend that more than the book.
Books #17-#19 were the Chaos Walking series by Patrick Ness. I'm just going go right out and say it and I'm probably going to get a lot of flack for this.
I think I liked it better than The Hunger Games.
I know. I'm sorry Katniss Everdeen. It might be because Fiance and I just saw the big screen version of the Hunger Games (and I hated it) but I geeze I loved these books.
Chaos Walking is set on a planet (New World) where the relatively newly arrived male settlers' thoughts are audible to those around them. Tyrannical ruler (a la President Snow, Hunger Games folks) seeks world domination, almost 1,000 pages of action packed reading follows.
Overall, I found the characters to be very compelling. The first book is written solely through the perspective of one of the protagonists, Todd, but each book adds another perspective which added to the depth of the story I think. The transition between each perspective was never clumsy and really added to the narrative (I can't believe I just wrote that...but its true!).
I would definitely, 100% recommend these books to everyone (I brought the first two to my grandmother on Sunday) but am secretly hoping they don't gain the acclaim that eventually found The Hunger Games. There is no way a movie could do this book justice and that seems to be the path for popular books these days. So puh-lease do not read it and keep the Todd Hewitt and Viola Eade of my imagination alive and well.
...But seriously, you should read this book right now.

The Banana Man Part Deux
Thursday, April 5, 2012
During our first year of college, a friend of mine lived in a suite with three other guys. Two to a bedroom, they shared one bathroom (ick, ick, ick) and a common room with typical college guy things (big television, posters, beer pong table). My friend's actual roommate was a total crazy (stories to be told another time) AND one of his suite-mates was a total bro. You know, like Jersey Shore bro-ey.
One Friday night a bunch of us were in his common room hanging out. I don't even know what we were doing because for the first few weeks of college, we were pretty committed to not drinking. Which lasted until about October when we discovered tequilla, but that's neither here nor there. Anyway, his bro-ey suite-mate was taking a shower, getting ready to go out to do whatever 18 year old bros do (I think we can safely assume fist pumping is involved).
He opened the bathroom door and emerged (in a towel) surrounded by a haze of, I kid you not a cloud of banana smell. You're confused right? We were, too!
The air around his might as well have been yellow...it was a banana smell SO strong that at first we didn't really even know what it was. We all kind of looked at each other while he walked past us and into his room and then one of us whispered, "Does he smell like bananas?"
And he did! He smelled like SO MANY bananas. Six years later, I still have not smelled such a fruity scent anywhere else.
Until my subway ride home yesterday...when I man (less bro-ey but still a dude if you catch my drift) got on my subway car at 14th Street.
He smelled like one million coconuts on a Wednesday afternoon at 5:15. WHERE are you GOING sir? Are you going to your job? Are you coming from your job? How do the people AT your job deal with your coconutty smell?
I guess my main question here is where did these two get these strong scents? I totally missed my chance six years ago when I could have just gone in the bathroom to see what product caused the banana smell. But I didn't want to risk icky boy bathroom-ness. And I couldn't very well ask the stranger on the train yesterday what he used.
So friends, today's mystery is brought to you by the fruity smelling men of New York. If you happen to find the coconut man on the E train heading uptown, help a sister out and ask him what his deal is, OK?
OK, thanks!

On October 18th, 2007 Fiance and I went on our first date.
On November 30th of that year we decided to make it official because you know, he was real handsome AND I got flowers on our first date (AND he wore a tie).
In September of 2009 we started talking about getting engaged...and in February 2011 we did!
In June of 2011 we moved in together and then adopted Dilly in September.
In February, we started looking at wedding venues.
Last Saturday, March 31st, 2012 we made some major wedding decisions...
On Saturday November 9th, 2013 we are getting married!

Dear New York...
Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Dear New York,
Sometimes, your subways have too many people on them. And the person in front of me on the sidewalk is simultaneously walking slowly AND tracking my movements precisely and not letting me pass them. Sometimes, I do not want to walk from the subway to my office and I wish I just drove up to an office building and parked in a lot. And sometimes, I want to punch the "Can I talk to you about my cause" people outside of the West 4th Street station in the face. Like, right between the eyes because YES I support gay marriage but NO I do not want to miss my train, I'm sorry peppy man with the too-short pants and penny loafers with no socks.
But sometimes, like last Monday I go out to diner with my friends (mmm sushi) and Fiance and I don't want to walk 12 blocks to the Subway to take us to Penn Station so we splurge and take a cab. And it is glorious...so glorious that we take pictures! And then I remember I have them in my email a week later!
This Spring I'm loving you something fierce, New York. And will love you even more when I no longer have to take a 50 minute train ride home and thus can stay out later (but let's not kid ourselves, not much later).
Looooove,
Kate

A Mini Monday Post!
Monday, April 2, 2012
Just a Mini Monday post this morning, as today kind of snuck up on me. As did April...whoops did not mail rent until this morning! UGH, adulthood you are hard.
This weekend we slept forever on Saturday (too many margaritas at Happy Hour on Friday...drink pounder I am no longer, apparently) and then went to see The Hunger Games. I was less than impressed (I loved, loved, loved the books) and am giving it a weak C+.
Yesterday, we went to my grandmother's for Palm Sunday (did you know Palm Sunday is a big holiday in my family? Because it is) and had delicious dinner and a lovely day.
My Mom was on her game (guys, we had raviolis and bacon gravy. Have you had bacon gravy? It is basically my favorite kind of Sunday dinner and I almost had to roll Fiance home). We picked up Alyssa at school to drive her to Nanny's and one of my favorite trees was in bloom! So I took a picture.
Happy Monday to you and you and you!
